NRG Stadium

In October 2000, Reliant Energy purchased the naming rights, thus the facility was named Reliant Stadium. It was renamed NRG Stadium in March 2014 after NRG Energy purchased Reliant Energy. The Houston Texans played their first regular season game at Reliant Stadium on September 8, 2002 against the Dallas Cowboys

The first Houston Texans Head Coach ever was Dom Capers who was also the first ever Head Coach of the Carolina Panthers.

The 10 players selected ahead of Texans defensive star J.J. Watt in the 2011 NFL Draft were: Cam Newton, Von Miller, Marcell Dareus, A.J. Green, Patrick Peterson, Julio Jones, Aldon Smith, Jake Locker, Tyron Smith, and Blaine Gabbert.

DeAndre Hopkins’ first three career TD receptions were thrown to him by three different quarterbacks: Matt Schaub, Case Keenum, and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

2009 saw Texans quarterback Matt Schaub lead the NFL in passing attempts (583), pass completions (396), passing yards (4,770), and passing yards per game (298.1).

Through 2010, the Houston Texans are one of just five NFL teams that have never drafted a Heisman Trophy winner in the NFL Draft.

The Texans were brought into the league as an expansion franchise, awarding an NFL team to the city of Houston because of their loss of the Houston Oilers a few years earlier.

When it came to naming the franchise, five names made it to the final selection committee; Texans, Bobcats, Apollos, Stallions, and Wildcatters.

The Kansas City Chiefs original name in the AFL had been the Dallas Texans. Before officially naming the franchise the Houston Texans, team officials sought permission from Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt to use the name.

Andre Johnson caught 64 TD passes while playing for the Houston Texans. He caught those touchdown passes from six different quarterbacks: David Carr, Tony Banks, Sage Rosenfels, Matt Schaub, Case Keenum, and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The first seven quarterbacks the Houston Texans would pick in the NFL Draft were David Carr in 2002, Dave Ragone in 2003, Drew Henson in 2003, B.J. Symons in 2004, Alex Brink in 2008, T.J. Yates in 2011, and Tom Savage in 2014.

In their first six years, the Texans have had the number one overall draft choice twice; selecting Quarterback David Carr in the team’s first year and Defensive End Mario Williams in 2006.

Houston Texans player DeMeco Ryans won the 2006 Defensive Rookie Of The Year Award.

Domanick Davis (later changing his name to Domanick Williams) won the 2004 Pepsi NFL Rookie Of The Year Award.

Before this current Houston Texans team, there have been five other professional football teams with the nickname Texans. The Kansas City Chiefs were originally the Dallas Texans. There was an original Dallas Texans NFL team that folded in 1952. There was a prior Houston Texans that eventually moved to Shreveport, Louisiana that played in the 1974 World Football League. Yet another team played as the Dallas Texans in the 1990’s, this time in the Arena Football League. Finally, when the Sacramento Gold Miners of the Canadian Football League moved to San Antonio for their final year before folding they played as the San Antonio Texans.

Quarterback David Carr tied an NFL record by completing 22 consecutive passes in a game. Mark Brunell had set the record a few weeks earlier on the exact same field.
At the time, when the Texans drafted Amobi Okoye in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft he was the youngest player ever drafted by an NFL team at 19 years old.

The first points scored in Houston Texans history came on a touchdown pass from rookie quarterback David Carr to tight end Billy Miller on the third play from scrimmage during the team’s first game.

When after their first season as a team both cornerback Aaron Glenn and defensive lineman Gary Walker were named to the Pro Bowl, the Houston Texans became the first expansion team to ever send more than one player to the Pro Bowl.

During the 2007 season, in a game against the Miami Dolphins, Texans kicker Kris Brown became the first kicker in the history of the NFL to successfully kick three field goals of 54 yards or longer in one game.

The Houston Texans were victorious in their first appearance on Monday Night Football when near the end of the 2008 regular season they defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 30-17.
